Unexpected Landing

Painted Lady Butterfly, August 2020

How often do we
see something for the first time  -
and really see it?

* We were on our way to dinner and she was fluttering around the front walkway like crazy - landing for less than a second and then taking off again. I had never seen a painted lady before and only identified her afterwards by the photo. It's exhilarating to host a new-comer. So far this summer we have had monarchs, swallowtails, sulfurs,a red admiral and now the painted lady.

Ordinary Days

Red Admiral Butterfly on Turk's Cap, August 2020

Ordinary days
hold extraordinary gifts
joyous and divine

* I was having morning coffee on the back porch and watching the birds fly in and out of the feeders when I saw a flash of red-orange. I couldn't believe my eyes - the first time to see this butterfly in my yard. One of my summer's happiest moments.

Hello Red

Red Begonias, August 2020

Simple happiness
we don't have to look so far
it's blooming right here

*On a visit to Santa Fe last year I noticed many shops keep begonias in their windows. After I returned to Houston, I placed one at the kitchen door so I could see it every time I come home. The bright red makes me happy.
