First Friday of Advent: Something Beautiful, Something Good from Around the Bend

Driving through the River from Laity Lodge, Fall 2025
Leakey, Texas

I know a place where the drive in and out takes me through the Frio river.

On the way in, my heart knows the feeling of coming home. And on the way out, just around the bend, my heart knows the feeling of beginning the drive back to my home city of Houston. I always say, "It's good to go - and good to come home."

Here's a secret: I carry the river in my heart. I can visit whenever I want. I carry the river down Gessner Drive and to the grocery store. I carry the river when I'm on zoom or making dinner or out for a walk. I carry the river on gray days. Sometimes I forget, but then I remember.

That's how it is once you've found a sacred place, a thin place - it becomes part of you. The places we carry in our hearts are something beautiful and something good.

This October Day

Desert Cloudywing Skipper  on Turk's Cap, October 2024

A flicker, a flight
a flash of obsidian
this October day

* I was sitting outside this afternoon and saw this small skipper making the rounds against the back fence. It's the first time I've ever seen one like it. After some research, she could be migrating. It's always exciting to see something for the first time.

Boldness

Vine Sphinx Moth, September 2024
Corpus Christi, Texas

What boldness it takes
to show up as yourself in
the full light of day

* A surprise guest in my mother's back garden- the exquisite vine sphinx moth. We checked back after it got dark and she was still there. A first sighting for all of us!

Planting in Faith

Red Spider Lilies, October 2023

Let me plant in faith
even when I've no idea
about the harvest

* I've had an affection for the red spider lily (sometimes called hurricane lilies) for many years. I first saw them in East Texas on youth retreats in the fall. I would slip away in the afternoons with my camera and roam the path around the lake to find them. Since then, I've planted a few at home and they always brighten up the garden after a long, hot summer.

Sunset

Brenham Sunset

November 2021

Today a beautiful sunset graced Brenham, Texas on our drive home. I loved watching it from the truck window and seeing the colors grow and fade right before my eyes. How I would love to have a porch with this view. I would sit until the stars came out.
