Rock Rose

I was on a short hike just outside of Pagosa Springs, Colorado some years ago and rock roses grew wild along the trail. Their bright pink stood out against a background of greens and browns. Back home, I strolled through a local garden center and came upon a very dry and wilted rock rose at the end of the summer and brought it home where it has been happy on the back porch. I love when it blooms and I'm reminded of my time in beautiful Colorado. Many of the plants in my garden remind me of people and places I hold close to my heart.

* We were driving away from the weekend rental and spotted this family of deer walking through the neighborhood and grazing from the front gardens. I got out of the car to catch a few photos. They did not seem alarmed.

* On the morning we left Colorado Springs, I went out to the car to load my suitcase and found this baby bird on the ground. I sat on the curb with my camera for a few photos, then set my camera down. I scooped her up and she nested in my hands for a few seconds. I think we were both surprised when she took a short flight into a nearby tree. I’ll never forget that encounter.

Click here to learn more about the memorial. My husbands father's name is engraved on the wall, along with thousands of firefighters who have died in the line of duty. It is a hallowed place to remember and meet other fire fighters and their families.
