Pentecost Sunday

Spirit's arrival
brings more strength and life than we
could have imagined

Broad-winged Hawk, May 2021

* I was getting the mail yesterday when I looked up the driveway and spotted this handsome hawk. I went back inside for my camera in hopes he will still be there - and he was. We stared at each other for a few curious moments and he allowed 2 clicks of the camera before he flew away in silence. I love seeing the sharpness in his eyes, the strength of his talons, and his soft feathers. Being this close and seeing him this clearly was almost like seeing a mythological creature.

Before you give up

Orchid, May 2021

This orchid has been living in my kitchen window almost 2 years. I water it when I remember. For the longest time, it's only been the green leaves. I thought it might be time to give up and let it go. I thought that maybe orchids are not the plants for me. I picked up the pot and turned it around- that's when I saw it. A new stem of tiny buds forming on the side that had been facing the window. I had completely missed them. I had almost given up, then it bloomed.

Mezuzah of Another Kind

Garden Fence, May 2021

 Post it near the door
it will cue your gratitude
as you come and go

* I purchased this sign at a local market when life was much busier. I hung it where I could see it every afternoon as I came home - a reminder that no matter what the day had been like, or what I might be feeling or worried about, there ways always something to be grateful for. Many days, I gave too much of myself towards being productive and working through a long list. Now, when I see this cheerful sign, I remember how it felt to pause at the back door after a full day and be revived by gratitude.

Dear Caterpillar

Monarch (newly eclosed), May 2021

Dear caterpillar,
did you ever dream that this
blessed day would come?

* The first monarch butterfly of the season eclosed early this morning. I sat down next to her for several quiet minutes as the sky lightened and the morning breeze stirred. She's allowing her wings to fill and will soon take her first flight.

Hope

Unidentified Green, May 2021

The heart shelters hope
making a home for green leaves
pressing towards the sun

The pink Angel Trumpet froze all the way to the ground this year. I'm just now seeing some green leaves at the base, but it's too soon to tell if it is the Angel Trumpet returning. The leaves might belong to a weed or another plant that got lost in the freeze. Time will tell - I'm hopeful.
