Learning to Love

Curly Leaf Croton, May 2020

Chaotic jumble
defying simplicity
summer's vibrant gift

If I learn to love
my own chaotic jumble
the gift will be mine

Magnolia

Magnolia, Friday May 22

Magnolia, Saturday May 23

Teach me to open, and then to open more.

"The very young woman can be charming and delightful and pretty but only a mature woman can be beautiful; and only a mature man can be strong enough to be tender."

Quiet

White wildflowers (possible Bishop's Flower), Spring 2020

When the world is loud,

go where quiet blooms and breathes,

silence will find you

Entering His World

Riley's World, May 2020

Another world waits,
the one he makes for himself
when the last bell rings

spray, smudge, layer, stamp
colors create galaxies
summer sets him free

Some Days

Pink Turk's Cap, May 2020

Some days when I wake
grief is fresh, so I take it
into morning light

Grief finds something soft,
like this pink that whispers "peace"
a new day begins

Kitchen Still Life, May 2020

I turn the page on the kitchen calendar
and King Tut greets me -
a reminder of ancient mystery
on an ordinary day.

When a person died in ancient Egypt, their heart was weighed
to indicate their worthiness to enter the afterlife.
A worthy heart had the lightness of a feather.

Not Egyptian, not ancient, not chasing worthiness,
but something in me desires to live this day
with lightness of heart.

Learning to See

Panda plant (kalanchoe tomentosa), May 2020

Teach me to recognize new growth.
Teach me to nestle and nurture it with gentleness.
What I so easily see in others, teach me to see in myself.

Blue Sky

Cloud like a feather, Spring 2020

Teach me to look up
When the world of my heart feels
Small and overwrought

Help me to be as
Open and wide as the sky
Free again to dream

Dragonfly

Dragonfly on aloe, May 2020

Dragonfly lands near
while I'm reading on the porch
my eyes leave the page

Attention moves to
 another story with my
iridescent guest

Daisies

African Daisies, May 2020

The daisies didn't find their way here by accident.
They weren't carried by the wind or a bird to spring up like a wildflower.

My neighbor chose them for his garden. Selected, planted,
and nurtured along until they were established enough to bloom.

In their home beneath the oak tree, they get just enough filtered light,
and the rain splashes their petals and sinks down to their roots.

Can I see that I haven't found my way here by accident?
Someone chose me for this place I call home-
I am chosen and nurtured by Love.

Can you see that you haven't found your way here by accident?
Someone chose you for the place you call home-
You are chosen and nurtured by Love.

Taking a New Path

Texas Prairie Nymph, Spring 2020

I walked to the right
Instead of to the left
and met this tiny treasure
in a neighborhood yard.

Surprise and delight were waiting
to stir my sluggish heart.

Afternoon Rain

Rose and Pentas, Spring 2020

A soft fall it was
Landing in the rain-soaked nest
of waiting flowers.

A soft fall it was
Landing in arms of friends
cradled in sure love.

The Smallest Things

Afternoon walk, Spring 2020

The smallest things can change everything.

The smallest flower can change a landscape.

The smallest dose of love can change a day - or a life.

Evening Walk

Wild Onion, Spring 2020

Even small wildflowers get their season to bloom,
sending out delicate curlicues into the neighboring grasses.

Help me to recognize the curls of my own heart
so I might bloom and reach out in my own time.

Mother's Day 2020

Newly eclosed butterfly on turk's cap, May 2020

Blessed are the ones who lead us to nourishment.
Blessed are the ones who nurture our transformation.
Blessed are the ones who allow us to take our time.
Blessed are the ones who see our beauty.
Blessed are the ones who protect us when we are vulnerable.
Blessed are the ones who encourage us to spread our wings and take flight.

Morning Walk

Morning Walk, May 2020

I look beyond my shaded shelter.
The path ahead is framed in grace and light.

Mulberry branches,
unexpected canopy
gives shaded shelter.

When I raise my eyes,
the well worn path ahead is
framed in grace and light.
